Adding to an impressive lineup of 41 classic toys, Nintendo’s Game Boy portable console was recently inducted into the Strong Museum of Play’s National Toy Hall of Fame in the United States, joining such luminaries as the Atari 2600, the Frisbee, the Skateboard, and the stick.
The Game Boy was chosen because no other videogame platform has ever done more “to put gamers ‘on the go’ than Nintendo Game Boy… Over the past two decades, Game Boy has become synonymous with portable gaming fun.”
The National Toy Hall of Fame website also notes that the Game Boy’s Game Link cable, allowing simultaneous multiplayer gaming, was “a first for a portable system,” while the Game Boy itself “remained relevant through a series of smaller, more powerful versions with enhanced gameplay features.”
“These advanced platforms incorporated backward compatibility, wireless communication, and unique peripherals devices. From its original configuration through to the tiny Game Boy Micro, the Game Boy line of video-game platforms popularized portable handheld gaming.”
The Game Boy was joined in this most recent round of inductees into the National Toy Hall of Fame by the Big Wheel tricycle and The Ball, bringing the total number of toys to 44.
