In an interview with AutoWeek during the SEMA auto show in Las Vegas this past week, Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that his latest project, the highly anticipated racing simulator Gran Turismo 5, has cost an approximate $60 million to develop – a total expenditure that he believes isn’t all that much:

“There are other games that cost more,” said Yamauchi after delivering the figure. “Considering the size and scale of the game, I think it’s probably a fairly small amount.”

Kazunori YamauchiDuring the interview, Yamauchi also casually confirmed that there would indeed be a Gran Turismo 6, which is a fact that we may take for granted, but is disarming how easily the information was relayed. When asked whether or not we can expect a Gran Turismo 6, Yamauchi said:

“Yes. You won’t have to wait as long as you did for GT5. GT5 represents a whole new operating system. GT6 is just new apps that run on the GT5 system.”

When asked about Forza Motorsport 3, Microsoft and Turn 10’s latest racing simulator, Yamauchi took a diplomatic stance:

“I was watching the guys at our company trying it out in the office. I tried it a little bit. It’s very similar in a lot of aspects to Gran Turismo. Some base components of the game are very different from Gran Turismo. It’s a little bit different from what a simulator is. You can feel it when you drive it.”
