Kaz Hirai: PSN will offer premium content alongside current free services

Kaz Hirai Demonstrates the PlayStation 3 Motion Controller

After a bit of a quick-fire rumour regarding the possibility that the PlayStation Network may move towards a subscription model to increase revenue from the service, Sony Computer Entertainment chief, Kaz Hirai, has allayed fears that gamers will soon have to start paying for currently free services offered through PSN, such as online gaming. Here’s Hirai:

“SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network,” said Hirai.

“Especially in the online area,” he continued, “we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.”

So while PlayStation users can expect to pay for premium content, such as movies, through a subscription-based service, online gaming will remain free, thank goodness.

What the hell is wrong with sony's hardware design team??? What is that, the ps dong wand? Does it vibrate also?? Seriously, remember the original ps3 boomerang/banana controller? I own an original ps3 and I hate looking at the ridiculous spiderman lettering on it! Maybe the reason people have been so reluctant to buy ps3's is because of tardo design choices. Thank god for the slim! Cmon guys pull your heads outta your butts...
