Modern Warfare 2 on PS3 back online

After the miniscule disaster of a launch for Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, as players on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 experienced problems with online multiplayer and unlocking Achievements and Trophies, the issues at hand seem to have dissipated for the most part.

When PS3 users couldn’t unlock their precious Trophies, Infinity Ward jumped on the problem and released patch 1.02 for Modern Warfare 2, solving that difficulty, but seemingly causing another, resulting in online multiplayer becoming completely unplayable.

The release of the patch and the inability to play online with the PS3 version of the game were unrelated, however, as Infinity Ward’s Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, posted on his Twitter account revealing that, due to unexpected demand from PS3 users, the online servers “died.”

This caused a bit of a knock-on effect, Bowling posts: “Demonware server died. Causing mass error messages to Sony’s server, which made it block all [MW2] connections to prevent PSN fail.”

According to Bowling, however, everything should be hunky dory for PS3 users right about now: “PS3 Status update of the day: PSN Multiplayer should be running at full capacity. We expect smooth skies ahead.”

After personally trying to connect, I found everything is indeed running as usual, and PS3 players should be able to connect to online multiplayer matches as usual.

The party invite patch, on the other hand, is still said to become available by the end of tomorrow (Friday).

the online play is indeed back up but the ability to add a friend is no longer working.

Apparently that fix will be coming along some time today (if it hasn't already been fixed with the version 1.03 patch that was recently released).
