Tales of Monkey Island: Lair of the Leviathan Review (PC)

The Tales grow episode by episode into a classic in adventure story-telling. It might be the hilarity of the closing credits I’ve just watched that makes me use superlatives like “hilariously funny” and “masterfully written”, but I don’t think I’ll be too ashamed of my words when the laughs from Murray’s bodiless antics simmer down to a sporadic mild chuckle.

I enjoyed The Launch of the Screaming Narwhal for mostly living up to its Monkey Island heritage and for the promise of future episodes. I loved The Siege of Spinner Cay for one particularly ingenious puzzle and the wonderfully original Vaycalians. But episode 3, The Lair of the Leviathan, is of an even higher quality: it is uniformly brilliant in every facet. Its scenario is crazier, its writing is cleverer, its puzzles are both more ingenious and less frustrating, its humour is more humorous, its graphics are more graphical and its sound is more good. If you’re waiting to see where the Tales go before putting down your cash for the whole season then wait no more! The quality has improved with every episode so far and the next one is called The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood – how could that not be the best thing ever!
