Jack Thompson, the US attorney with an infamous taste for anti-videogame lawsuits, is now officially, permanently disbarred, according to a ruling made by the Florida Supreme Court. He has also been ordered to pay $43,675.35 to compensate for accumulated court fees relating to his disbarment case.
While the cheers from gamers around the world can be heard floating o’er the lands, Thompson has a chance of a retrial, but only if a member of the Florida Bar, in good standing with the courts, files such a motion. Thompson himself has already filed an emergency motion to delay the ruling in order to, amongst other things, continue the defence of a current client, whom Thompson repeatedly refers to as “an innocent man”. In the motion, Thompson also alludes to a conspiracy in progress, “a cover-up in order to keep this innocent man in jail.” Read Thompson’s full motion here.
The disbarment ruling comes into effect in 29 days. When it does, the 31-year-old legal career of one Jack Bruce Thompson comes to an end. Kinda sad.
