Judging by the latest Media Create figures a Pokémon craze swept across Japan this past week. Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum for the DS debuted at the top spot with a whopping 963 000 copies. Known as Pocket Monsters Platinum in Japan, the third game in the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl series was released in Japan on the 13th of September, which means that it sold almost one million copies in its first two days on sale.
There are a total of five new entries this week and with sales figures bolstered all around, the hardware chart is sure to be a cracker tomorrow.
Konami’s Quiz Magic Academy DS entered the charts at number 2 with 119 000 copies and Square Enix’s Infinite Undiscovery for the Xbox 360 debuted at number 3 with an impressive 90 000 copies. Sales of this popular title along with the price cut of the Xbox 360 in Japan (the Xbox 360 Arcade is now the least expensive current-gen console in Japan) will most definitely cause a bump in the hardware sales of the 360. In fact, early reports indicate that the Xbox 360 not only outsold the PS3 this week, but also beat the Wii, PSP and PS2 to claim second place on the hardware chart.
Namco Bandai’s One Piece Unlimited Cruise: Episode 1 for the Wii debuts at number 4 with 61 000 copies while Nintendo’s Rhythm Tengoku Heaven for the DS drops from last week’s number 1 to number 5 with 56 000. Nintendo’s Wii Fit loses footing at number 6, dropping four places with 25 000 copies.
Konami’s D.Gray-man: Sousha no Shikaku for the PS2 is new at number 7 with 15 000 copies while Nintendo’s Mario Kart Wii climbs one place to number 9 but continues creeping towards the 2 million sales mark with 14 000 copies. Nintendo’s other rhythm game Daigasso! Band Brothers DX drops one spot to number 9 with 14 000 copies and Konami’s J-League Winning Eleven 2008 Club Championship for the PS2 drops five places to number 10 with 13 000 copies.
Stay tuned for the hardware figures which will be released tomorrow. Apart from expecting the Xbox 360 to outperform the PS3, PSP and possibly even the Wii, the Nintendo DS also looks set to shine with two really big sellers in the top two places on the software chart and a total of four titles in the Top 10.
