Sony responds to NPD, boasts PS3 sales higher than 360

Sony was obviously quite happy with the PS3’s performance in the US in June. The “tremendous momentum” of the PS3 was continued thanks to the launch of the PS3-exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 and 404 488 PS3’s were sold, 84% higher than the Xbox 360.

Sony confirmed that PS3 hardware sales growth has exceeded 311% year-on-year in June, with over 94% month-on-month growth. Metal Gear Solid 4 topped the software chart in June, selling 774 647 copies. Software for the PS3 showed a 300% year-on-year increase with over 2.4 million software units for the PS3 being sold in June.

Sony highlighted key upcoming titles for the PS3 that promise to drive hardware sales into the holiday season. These include PS3 exclusives such as SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Confrontation, Resistance 2, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, NBA ’09: The Inside and LittleBigPlanet.

Sony also pointed out that the PlayStation Network continues to be popular with over 10 million accounts being registered worldwide and 180 million pieces of content downloaded worldwide.

The PSP also recorded strong sales in June with 337 356 units sold (85% month-over-month increase) thanks to the God of War: Chains of Olympus PSP bundle being released. Not to be left out in the cold, the PS2 sold 188 798 units, up 42% from May, with 3.9 million software units sold. To date over 42.4 million PS2s have been sold in the US.

Last but not least Sony stressed that the PlayStation brand earned $626.7 million in June with year-to-date revenues standing at $2.9 billion. Total hardware revenue for the PlayStation brand reached $265.5 million in June with software revenue recording $298 million.

“The PlayStation brand is truly hitting its stride on its long-term opportunity across all three platforms. Our strong June numbers serve as proof to the continued momentum of the PS3 and affirms that we’re exactly where we expected to be” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, Sony of America.

“This month’s success can be attributed to the exclusive blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and we’re poised for continued growth into the back half of the year with a much anticipated line-up, including LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and NBA ’09: The Inside. Additionally, the new PlayStation Network video delivery service will be a big driver for the PS3 and PSP, allowing consumers to extend their multi-media and entertainment experience.”

It sounds all good to me.

The sales spike will be dead next month just like 360's was with Halo 3.

Sony forgot to mention that they are 2.9 billion in the hole so far from PS3 as well.

They are losing a lot of money on the PS3, but I think they are making tons on the PS2 and PSP to offset that loss. I don't think they are losing as much as people think.

Not to mention Sony (and Nintendo and Microsoft) making money from licensees (3rd party developers).

Scott - Sony's last earnings report for PS3 alone was a 1.8 billion dollar loss. 2.9 billion in total losses since PS3's launch.

This article has Sony saying they are making money but they aren't counting the difference from their losses.

None of this includes PS2 and PSP numbers.

They all do it.

You guys should submit your resume's, see if Sony is hiring for financial advisors. You guys can't balance your check books but you have business advice for a biliion dollar company. They know what their doing.

We're just stating the facts. They're losing money. Regardless of the fact that the PS2/PSP are offsetting some of that loss, the PS3 is causing them a huge loss.

Sony may know what they're doing, but they don't know what the competition is doing. If they did, some of Microsoft's announcements at E3 wouldn't have been such a shocker to so many.

I personally see no reason to buy a PS3. I can't stand MGS, but even if I did, what else is there that the 360 doesn't equal or better?

>I can't stand MGS, but even if I did, what else is there that the 360 doesn't equal or better?

How about something simple like playing a blu-ray disc, for starters?

What I think everyone's forgetting is that Sony don't consist only of the Playstation brand. I can't assume to know Sony's books, but their revenues from televisions, dvd-players, car radios, home electronics, and of course, revenues from the profit-making Playstation-brand consumables MUST somehow make up for the losses in the PS3 sector. As Oliver correctly states, licensing fees also cover a lot of shortfall. If they were making such huge losses without a backup revenue stream, Sony would have gone under years ago—look at other console manufacturers of yore who DIDN'T have alternate revenue streams and see what I mean.
