The PSP has topped the Japanese hardware chart for another week. The latest Media Create figures show that the PSP sold 70 536 units for the week ending the 18th of May.
It is interesting that all the consoles experienced quite a dramatic drop in sales this week following Golden Week, all except the Xbox 360. The PSP sold 89 884 units last week while second place winner this week the Wii sold 67 308 units last week in comparison to 41 572 units this week.
The Nintendo DS sold 34 905 units to earn third followed by the PS3 with 7 701 units (51 228 and 8 054 units last week respectively). The PS2 almost caught up with its older brother with 7 022 units and the Xbox 360 followed with 1 474 units. The PS2 sold 422 less units this week while the 360 steamed ahead with 176 more units.
Wii Fit vs PS3
To fascinate you even further I thought I would point out that Wii Fit has overtaken the PS3 in terms of life-to-date sales. Nintendo’s Wii Fit has sold 2.074 million copies while the PS3 lags behind with 2.05 million units. Wii Fit was released in Japan on the 1st of December 2007 while the PS3 launched in the land of the rising sun in November 2006. This means that despite having a 13 month head-start the PS3 is 24 000 units behind Wii Fit.
While we are on this track, bear in mind that Capcom’s Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G has racked up life-to-date sales of 2.045 million. Another 5 000 copies and it will also pass the PS3. Taking into account that MHP2G sold 53 248 copies this week it should overtake the PS3 in the coming week.
Head over to the software chart to see how the software titles faired this week.
