PS3 system software update v2.20 in March

SCEE today announced that system software update version 2.20 for the PS3 will be released in late March. It will add Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 (known as BD-Live) and enable photo and music playlists on a PS3 to be copied to a PSP.

Promising to deliver “the ultimate interactive film experience,” BD-Live enables PS3 owners to take full advantage of interactive features including downloadable video content, ringtones and games.

You will need an internet connection and a minimum of 1GB local storage to access Blu-ray Profile 2.0. In addition movies with BD-Live are scheduled to be released next month.

BD-Live enables PS3 owners to access various features, depending on each title. These features include downloadable content (such as bonus scenes, shorts, trailers, subtitles, ringtones that can be sent to mobile phones and images) and interactive movie-based games that mean players from around the world can play against each other online or simply compete against other players in the same room.

Other new features

System software update version 2.20 also enables media content to be shared between the PS3 and PSP by allowing PS3 owners to copy music and photo playlists to their PSP.

Other new features included in the update include resume play which enables the PS3 to start playing a BD and DVD video at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been removed. Audio Output Device is a new Remote Play setting that enables the PSP to serve as a remote control for music played through the PS3.

The PS3’s internet browser will also be enhanced so video files that are directly linked from a web page will be able to be streamed. The browser’s view speed will also be improved and you will be able to play DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB. The update will also add Mosquito Noise Reduction as an AV setting in the control panel of the DVD/BD player to improve the movie playback.
