Sony: We’re beating Xbox 360 in Europe

Shortly after Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 across the entire European region in November, Sony has declared that they are ahead of Xbox in PAL territories.

PS3According to SCEE President David Reeves, Sony has revealed internal figures showing the PS3 has sold 300 000 more units than the Xbox 360 across the PAL territories. These figures show that the Xbox 360 is not outselling the PS3 in Europe despite Microsoft’s earlier claims.

Furthermore, Sony does not feel it needs to cut the price of the PS3 to increase consumer interest. On the other end of the scale Microsoft believes that consumers are responding to the reduction in the price of the Xbox 360 in September. Sony plans to focus on the value offered by the PS3 as well as its extra functions and services. It has no plans to drop the cost of the PS3 every time a way to save manufacturing costs is discovered.

“No we are not going to go down in price; neither are we going to go down in price on PS3 in spring time either. Absolutely not, whatever you might have heard to the contrary. Our strategy is very much value added,” said Reeves.

David Reeves“When we came into the industry we started at zero. And we had to have a model that offered price elasticity. As soon as we got the manufacturing price down on PSOne we lowered the price. Same with PS2. But we’re not doing that on PS3 – that’s not the model, even if people are expecting it,” he continued.

“We’re relying on the fact that the industry will keep growing and while we might have a comparatively smaller share of the market we will have higher sales. PS3 is tracking where PS2 was at the same point in its life. The value added strategy will continue for some years to come.”

So, what can we expect from Sony next year? According to Reeves, “We are a in a solid position, and are not lackadaisical. Next year we are probably going to be a little bit more aggressive when we reach the break-even point.”

Take that.

It is interesting to note that Sony say they are 300 000 units ahead in the PAL territories. Microsoft claim the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 in Europe, it did not include all the PAL territories.

This could well be a war of words rather than a continuation of the console wars.

Any thoughts?

It's like watching a battle between Honda (MS) and Toyota (Sony), while Ferrari (Nintendo) is way off in the distance anyway. Quite ironic... and I find it exceptionally hilarious.

This war of words is completely necessary at this time of year. For people looking to buy consoles as X-mas presents, it's always nice to know that the company making the console is ahead of the competition.

Nintendo may be ahead of the Sony and MS in terms of sales, but in terms of its abilities, I'd have to say it's right at the back.

I have to agree with you Dawid. I always find it amusing that neither company mentions how they are performing against Nintendo. It's like the Wii is the silent competitor that neither Sony nor Microsoft wants to mention, but we all know its out there.....
