Microsoft: November was biggest sales month for Xbox 360 in Europe

Microsoft has revealed that November was the biggest sales month ever for the Xbox 360 in Europe.

Xbox 360The sales recorded over November 2008 were up 124% over last year and the largest Xbox 360 sales ever in the six year history of the brand in Europe. Microsoft also revealed that data from GfK and Chart Track shows that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 across the entire region. In fact, according to the press release, it has seen “significant gains in markets like France, Spain and Italy, where it has been outselling the PS3 week after week.”

According to Microsoft the Xbox 360 has sold over seven million consoles in Europe since it was launched there in November 2005, and not only that but it was also the fastest-growing console in Europe for November. Sales of the Xbox were up 124% year-on-year, while the Wii recorded just 43% and the PS3 3%.

More about what Microsoft had to say about their success after the jump.

[UPDATE] Sony has since disputed Microsoft’s claims by revealing that the PS3 is 300 000 units ahead of the 360 in Europe.

“November was a very significant milestone for Xbox – we sold the most consoles ever in our history in Europe, and are outselling PlayStation 3 week-on-week across Europe. Since the reduction in the Xbox 360 ERP in September, bringing the entry-level price point for Xbox 360 down to Ł129.99, consumers have responded enthusiastically to the Xbox 360 offering,” said Chris Lewis, Regional Vice President, Interactive Entertainment Business EMEA.

“Our strong partnerships with retail and with publishers have played a big role in this success – we are working closely with retail to ensure a steady supply of consoles throughout the Christmas season, and third-party games have been selling well on the Xbox 360 platform and providing great choice for consumers.”

“In the current economic conditions, consumers are more cautious than ever and looking for more value for their entertainment spend,” said Lewis. “Xbox 360 delivers that value - we’re now the best-value next-gen console on the market and this positive momentum indicates Xbox 360 is offering the right blend of gaming and entertainment experiences at the right price.”

Piers Harding-Rolls, senior games analyst at media research company Screen Digest, added his thoughts to the mix: “Even under the current economic conditions European consumers are spending strongly on games as we reach the mass adoption phase of this cycle of consoles. This Christmas we expect console game sales to outperform last year by a substantial margin, which is a boost for the whole industry. Consumers recognise that games offer a strong value proposition compared to many other forms of entertainment and this is being reflected at the tills.”

i think this is exactly what Microsoft needed to do to get ahead of the competition. Everyone plays video games and wants the newest things, but all of the new generation game systems are just too expensive to consider buying. This gave consumers just that little thought in there heads " oh look at the prices of xbox now". Microsoft attributed this increase in sales due to the abilities of retailers and publishers, but if that were true then xbox sales would've jumped more significantly when game selling titles did come out like Gears of War 2 and Halo 3 and so forth. Other game systems have been trying the price lowering tactic like Sony. Except this is where there's a big difference in games coming out for xbox compared to the quality of games coming out for the playstation 3. So Microsoft doing really well in November is mostly due to price drops, and how interesting their game titles are.
