It has come to be. As predicted by Microsoft just over a week ago, sales of the Xbox 360 have surpassed the full lifetime sales of the original Xbox, doing so in the Xbox 360’s birthday month.
The original Xbox was said to have sold a respectable 25 million units, before Microsoft abandoned the console in favour of their new baby. Three years later, their new baby, the Xbox 360, has not only reached that total but outstripped it, and will continue to improve upon that number as Microsoft have no intention of abandoning this one. Microsoft’s VP of interactive entertainment business for EMEA Chris Lewis said of the achievement:
“We’ve already surpassed the installed base of the original Xbox – which is a really significant milestone. We’ve been blown away by the appetite of people to consumer digital entertainment experiences.”
“We’re at a price point that is uniquely placed – not least of which because we’re in somewhat of a challenging economic time. Ever since we dropped the price seven weeks ago, we’ve outstripped PS3 on a weekly run rate in all the territories we care about in EMEA – specifically the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Russia.”
The numbers for this holiday season are going to be bonkers.
