EA has taken the wraps off its first personal training product known quite simply as EA Sports Active.
EA are obviously hoping to enjoy some of the success that Nintendo has notched up since the launch of their popular Wii Fit game earlier in the year, and it is clear that they are taking note of Nintendo’s strategy to draw non-traditional gamers into the gaming realm.
EA Sports Active will be available across the US exclusively for the Wii in March 2009. Retailing at $60, the new fitness game is said to offer a more rigorous training opportunity than Wii Fit and hopes to target women as a cheaper alternative to attending gym.

Developed in collaboration with Bob Greene (none other than Oprah’s personal trainer), EA’s new fitness game will include over 20 sports for two players as well as various fitness tools such as a calorie counter, virtual personal trainer, 30-day weight loss program and players can even customize their workouts.
The game will not make use of the Wii Balance Board, instead players will make use of two specially designed leg straps that hold the Wii Remote and Nunchuck to track lower body movements. In addition the game will come bundled with a rubber resistance band to assist with strength training.
“EA SPORTS Active and our entrance into the fitness space is an exciting and groundbreaking milestone for EA SPORTS,” said Peter Moore, president, EA SPORTS. “As we continue to expand our brand, we have a real opportunity to redefine the home fitness experience with a more Western cardiovascular approach and exercises that will appeal to a diverse audience, getting people off the couch and into shape while interacting with our products in a way never before possible.”
EA SPORTS Active costs less than a gym membership, it provides a variety of exercises unlike a one dimensional in-home fitness contraption, and it delivers an interactive experience that you don’t get from a DVD – this is a true fitness revolution and a space in which we intend to be leaders.”
