Atari to publish Ghostbusters, Riddick

Atari LogoIt’s been announced that Atari has picked up the publishing and distribution rights for two of the games left in publishing limbo, after Activision Blizzard cut them from their schedule.

Both Ghostbusters and a new Riddick game, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, will be published by Atari. Ghostbusters is set for a release next year (or “early next summer”) to coincide with the Ghostbusters movie 25th anniversary. The Riddick game has a few more revelations, though.

Starbreeze, the developers of the critically acclaimed Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay were originally only remaking that game for the next-generation of consoles, with added multiplayer, but it’s now been revealed that a new campaign is in the works, as well as the addition of a multiplayer mode. Head of Universal Interactive, Bill Kispert said:

“Originally it was just a remake, but we started thinking more and felt that wasn’t super compelling. The new campaign is robust, it’s not an extra mission or two. It has a storyline, new characters, new locations, new weapons.” He also commented on the multiplayer portion saying it’s “something a little different” than what players expect from multiplayer. The game will be out next year.

Additionally, Atari have signed a deal with Universal to develop further games based on the Riddick franchise. Atari is said to have paid a flat (undisclosed) fee to Activision Blizzard to cover some of the expenses of developing both Riddick and Ghostbusters, originally paid for by Sierra/Vivendi.
