Filings at the US Federal Communications Commission’s website reveal that Sony has plans to release a white PS3 in the United States.
The PS3 was released in ceramic white in Japan in November last year and the latest information and pictures of the new white model suggest that a North American release date could be imminent.
Sony has so far failed to confirm the rumours but released the following comment to GameSpot “As you may know, there are many FCC filings like this each year. We haven’t made any announcements about upcoming PS3 plans, but are comfortable with our current two SKU strategy. We are continually evaluating the market trends and consumer input to determine the appropriate PS3 models for our territory.”
However, SCEA’s request to the FCC in October 2007 that short-term confidentiality be given “to avoid premature release of sensitive information prior to marketing or release of the product to the public” seems to suggest that something is afoot.
Prices and release dates still remain unknown.
