Norwegian Cruise Line today became the first cruise line to offer guests the chance to experience Nintendo’s Wii on board its ships.
Guests will find Wii systems on Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Norwegian Pearl, as well as all NCL’s America ships but will be available on the rest of NCL’s fleet by April. Guests will be able to play Wii Sports featuring tennis, golf, baseball, boxing and bowling along with Wii Play, WarioWare: Smooth Moves and Excite Truck.

Wii’s social phenomenon growing
“With its active, engaging and inviting game experiences appealing to every age from kids to parents to grandparents, the Wii from Nintendo is a natural fit for Freestyle Cruising,” said Colin Veitch, NCL’s president and CEO. “With the addition of Wii to our on-board activities, we can now offer bowling, boxing, golf, tennis and baseball across the entire fleet. Cheering, yelling and high-fives will be highly encouraged.”
“Millions of people around the world continue to discover the fun of playing Wii with their friends and families,” says George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Norwegian Cruise Line is a great partner, as they offer us direct access to non-traditional gamers. Our partnership reinforces how Wii’s social phenomenon continues to grow, from the centerpiece of gaming parties, to a workout supplement, to a fun facet of vacation cruises.”
Customizable experience at sea
Each ship will feature Wii systems in the atrium and other public rooms. Guests will be able to gather and play against each other on large video screens. Each ship has a Kid’s Crew facility which will also have two Wii kiosks providing kids-only fun. Look out for tournaments and activities on board.
“This partnership with Nintendo is an industry first and another innovation for NCL,” Veitch said. “This continues our mission to dismantle the traditional cruise experience and deliver the most exciting and most customizable experience at sea.”

Nintendo today announced that the fun and addictive puzzler, Picross DS, would be launching across Europe exclusively on the DS on the 11th of May at an estimated retail price of £30.
This pick up and play title is the latest in Nintendo’s Touch! Generations series joining other popular games such as Nintendogs, 42 All Time Classics and Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training. Picross DS offers light puzzle entertainment that is accessible to everyone, irrespective of age or experience. Be warned though because players will have to have speedy fingers and fast minds to conquer the puzzles in Picross DS.

Quick and quirky puzzle solving fun
The main Picross Mode requires players to reveal a hidden image which lies beneath the puzzle by filling in a grid with squares and crosses to complete patterns. Players can look forward to 300 puzzles ranging from elementary five by five grids to complicated twenty by twenty grids. Should players get stuck they can choose to receive clues to help finish the puzzle as well as give themselves a head start with a roulette style hint function which reveals one line of the puzzle.
My Picross Mode allows players to create their own puzzles which they can share with their friends using the Nintendo DS wireless connectivity or the Wi-Fi Connection service or even challenge their friends with. Players will use the DS stylus and touch screen to design Picross DS puzzles of all sizes as well as the images beneath the puzzle which is released upon its completion.
Chart your progress
Picross DS also features a calendar based Daily Picross DS Mode where players are challenged to complete several quick puzzles every day. This mode is comprised of the five by five grid puzzles and is designed to test how quickly players can analyze and complete five small puzzles. A chart will also plot each day’s results which show a player’s progress. Players can unlock new modes through playing Daily Picross DS Mode for consecutive days, including No X’s, Error Search and Memory.
Mini-games and unlockable customization options
Keep an eye out for various touch screen mini-games which can be unlocked and played in the main Picross Mode. Players will compete in skill and reaction based challenges as they race against the clock. Players can also customize their game environments by unlocking various different skins with themes including nature, sport and video game heroes.
Multiplayer mode allows up to five players to compete against each other and the clock to complete puzzles first in Multi-Picross Mode. Players can also take part in Online Battle Mode with another player from anywhere in the world with Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection service. Wi-Fi also allows players to download a nearly endless supply of new puzzles. Players can upload the puzzles which they have created in My Picross Mode which other players can browse and download online. Players can also download official puzzles from Nintendo.

The Xbox 360 120GB hard drive enables gamers to store thousands of songs, a library of Xbox Live Arcade Games along with downloadable HD TV shows and movies which are available on Xbox Live Marketplace. The new 120GB hard drive will also be sold as a stand-alone accessory meaning current Xbox 360 owners can upgrade their 360 for $179.99.
Xbox 360 fans can also purchase the additional Xbox 360 Elite accessories which will also be available separately, including the black Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, black Xbox 360 Play & Charge kit and the black Xbox 360 rechargeable battery. The Xbox 360 HDMI cable is new to Xbox 360. HDMI allows consumers to get HD video as well as multichannel surround sound from one cable. The Xbox 360 Elite will also come with Xbox Live Silver Membership as well as a one month subscription to Xbox Live Gold.
“Today’s games and entertainment enthusiast has an insatiable appetite for digital high-definition content,” said Peter Moore, corporate vice president for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “Xbox 360 Elite’s larger hard drive and premium accessories will allow our community to enjoy all that the next generation of entertainment has to offer.”
Although the PS3 failed to break the opening weekend hardware record of 32 421 units sales set by Nintendo’s Wii last December, it still sold 20 000 units in Australia during the first three days after its launch. Sony Australia is reporting that the sales of hardware, software, and extras down under have topped AUS$25 million so far.
Sony’s next-gen console also failed to top Microsoft’s Xbox 360 launch sales figures, which held the record for a console launch in Australia with its 30 000 units sold in its first four days, amounting to AUS$30 million. However, Microsoft lost this record when Nintendo launched its Wii last December.
Nintendo is not to be outdone by the PS3 breaking sales records in the UK this past weekend. Nintendo today announced that the Nintendo DS and DS Lite combined have sold over three million units in the UK with the DS taking 68% of sales of the 2007 handheld console market.
Nintendo has credited its success to games and software which has been designed to appeal to a wide range of people including non-gamers. The Touch! Generations titles, including Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training, Nintendogs, Electroplankton and Sudoku Master, stand as examples of the popularity of DS titles among non-gamers.
David Yarnton, Nintendo UK’s general manager said “It’s a great testament to the strength of the DS hardware and software range available, that just as Nintendo DS has passed its second birthday here in the UK, it reaches such a landmark sales figure. With many more Touch! Generations games launching in 2007, Nintendo DS and Wii will continue to be the main driving forces behind the expansion of the video game market this year.”
