Square Enix in Japan recently announced that Dragon Quest IX would be a Nintendo DS title. The title is due to be released in 2007. Series creator Yuji Horii has been known to say in the past that the Dragon Quest series will always go to the console with the largest install base in Japan.
The title is being developed by Level-5, who obviously have their fingers in many console pies as they are also developing White Knight Story for the PlayStation 3. Level-5 also developed Dragon Quest VIII for the PlayStation 2. This is the ninth in the Dragon Quest series and is subtitled “Hoshizora no Mamoribito,” which according to 1UP translates to something like “Defender of the Starry Skies.”
The game will be done in 3D and will feature action-oriented battles as well as the ability for up to four players to network. Development of the game is well under way and a playable demo was shown at the game’s unveiling in Japan.
