Tetris DS

Sunday 17 Sep 2006

I will assume for the moment that you know what Tetris is. Sorry, but it just seems unlikely that you’ll be reading this and not know what Tetris is. But then it was very unlikely that they were going to destroy the Ring and look what happened there. Fine.

Blocks fall. You spin them around. You try to make complete rows of blocks. Then that row disappears.

Now that the mechanics in all their minutiae are fully explored we can discuss what makes the DS version quite good. It has ten player single-cart download play. That means, yes, with one cart ten people can play. Of course, all ten need DS’s. It also has one-on-one push mode which is interesting – you drop blocks on each other from opposite directions and try to complete rows of blocks. Both these modes are also available over Wi-Fi Connection, Nintendo’s free online service, but only four players are allowed in the online mode at a time. It also has two puzzle modes – one that has you trying to use a few blocks to clear the screen, and one that has you use the touch screen to drag blocks around to clear the screen. The puzzle modes have lots of puzzles and the touch puzzles get really tough.

The other fun aspect is the integrating of Nintendo themes in the game – the main game mode (the 200 line goal) has different Mario theme tunes and backgrounds playing and showing while you’re playing. However, 200 lines is not that hard with the infinite rotate the game allows, where as long as you’re rotating a piece (with the A button) a new one doesn’t come. Endless mode is crazy because you can go above the allotted digits in the row count at the top of the screen because of the infinite rotate. These are rules from the Tetris licensor, so it’s not really Nintendo’s fault, but it is a knock on the game.

Do we need another Tetris game? Well, I can’t think of one with Wi-Fi connectivity, so yes, we do. Plus they jammed a lot of extra stuff into the game that will make it last so much longer. It’s still a classic.
