Call of Duty 3

Friday 25 Jul 2008

This might have been released ages ago but only recently have I had the chance to get through some of my backlogged games (there are plenty more where this came from). I finished Call of Duty 3 on the Xbox 360 ages ago and thought it would only do me some good to actually play this Wii version of the same game. Sadly it does not live up to what I was hoping it might be.

The first thing that hits home is that it is really ugly. After playing something like Super Mario Galaxy or Metroid Prime on the Wii you expect so much more, but then what can one really expect from a game that practically launched alongside the Wii. With that bit out the way it’s up to the controls on the Wii to help out and it does a fairly good job. I say fairly as one can see that they were still testing the waters when it comes to the accuracy of the Wiimote.

If you’ve ever played Metroid Prime Corruption then you will know what the differences are between “normal” and “advanced” mode. “Normal” mode made you feel as if your cursor was stuck in a box and that “box” viewpoint only moved from left to right once your cursor moved quite close to the margins of it and the “advanced” mode was very direct. When you moved the cursor your viewpoint changed, like when using an analog stick with other FPS games. Call of Duty 3 uses the “normal” mode and as such it is quite a mission to have pin-point accuracy.

There are some nice touches to the controls where you hold the Nunchuck and Wiimote upright and turn them like a steering wheel when driving a car or literally fight an enemy soldier off by copying the moves on screen (which normally consist of punching and pulling). To plant bombs you have to literally insert the pin, turn it and pull it out, quite enjoyed that.

The problem when playing this game is that it is really just a PS2 game with revamped controls and it shows. I did not mention anything regarding multiplayer because there is none…sucks? Yes it does.

If you have to play a World War 2 game then I would suggest you rather play Call of Duty 3 on the 360. If you need to play one on the Wii then go for Medal of Honour Heroes 2. Don’t bite the bullet with this one.

Pros: Some nice gestures using the Wiimote.

Cons: Graphics; no multiplayer.
