Nintendo’s Wii and DS top two gaming systems in US for 2007

Monday 21 Jan 2008

The latest data from NPD shows that Nintendo’s Wii and DS were the two best-selling video game systems in the US for 2007.

The Nintendo DS took the crown as the top-selling game system of 2007 in the US, selling an impressive 8.5 million units with over 4 million being purchased over November and December. The Wii came in second place with a hardly shabby total of 6.3 million, recording sales of 2.3 million for November and December.

“By the end of 2007 we were sold out of virtually all hardware, and much of our stock of software and accessories was sold out as well, thanks to the broad appeal of Wii and Nintendo DS to core gamers, women, families, grandparents – and seemingly everyone in between,”said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “And that momentum continues here in the early weeks of 2008.”

Here are some additional facts that NPD data revealed about Nintendo’s performance in the US during 2007:

  • Nintendo sold more video game hardware than all other manufacturers combined, a whopping 52%.
  • Over 17.6 million Nintendo DS and almost 7.4 million Wii units have been sold in the US since the systems were launched.
  • Up until the end of 2007 Wii Play has sold 4.1 million copies.
  • Super Mario Galaxy was launched on the 12th of November and has sold over 2.5 million copies since then.
  • The original Brain Age and its sequel have each sold roughly 1 million copies in 2007.
  • Out of the top 30 best-selling games sold in 2007, half were made for Nintendo systems. Pokemon Pearl, Pokemon Diamond, Mario Party DS, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games are a few examples.
  • Out of the top 30 best-selling portable games sold in 2007, 25 were made for the Nintendo DS and two for the GBA.
  • The Nintendo DS continues to grow in popularity, recording a 60% sale increase from 2006.
  • The video game industry grew by 43% in 2007, with Nintendo claiming responsibility for 60% of that growth.
