Nintendo Wii set to launch in early October in SA

Thursday 06 Sep 2007

According to Gamespot, ‘Wii is set[ting] up shop in sub-Sahara.’ Let me explain this for the benefit of all the gamers out there who, like me, missed the plot about what this actually means.

Gamespot is reporting that ‘Nintendo is opening up a new territory to release the Wii.’ That territory would be South Africa, and those happy gamers would be you and me. Better dust off those vuvuzelas because this calls for a celebration!

Wii, Wii, Wii, all the way to SA

Citing News24 as its source, Gamespot reported that South African gamers will be able to purchase the Wii as of early October. This confirmation seems to increase the likelihood that Core Group, recently announced to be the new Nintendo distributor in South Africa, will be at rAge 2007, armed and dangerous with Wiis. Many South African gamers are eagerly awaiting confirmation that the Wii will indeed launch in South Africa this month or early next month and that Wii stock will be available in the country despite Nintendo’s struggles to meet current demand due to a shortage of components.

Although a price has yet to be announced, News24 anticipate that gamers will have to fork out as much as R2700 ($390) to get their hands on a Wii. Even though this price is still well below that of a 60GB PS3 which is priced at R6600 ($920) and a Premium Xbox 360 which is priced at R3699 ($515), it remains to be seen whether gamers will be willing to pay this when they can import the Wii for cheaper. The Wii retails at around R1800 ($249.99) in the US.

Despite the high price tag and uncertainty regarding availability of stock and software, it cannot be denied that it really warms the cockles of your heart to see a headline boasting ‘Nintendo’s Wii coming to SA.’ It only took a couple of months, I mean it has been almost a year since the Wii was launched overseas…Oh well, better late than never I suppose.
