Japanese sales data: Observation training and RE4: Wii Edition on top
Saturday 09 Jun 2007
A new Touch! Generations game published by Nintendo has hit the top spot on the video game sales charts in Japan according to sales tracking firm Media Create. For the week of 28th May to 3rd June the game came a whisker short of a century and sold 95 thousand copies. In second place was the third release of Capcom’s Resident Evil 4, this time for the Wii. The game has a new control scheme built around the Wii’s remote, the same content as the PlayStation 2 version of the game and the same graphics level as the GameCube version except it does have full widescreen support. In it’s opening week stores managed to sell 44 thousand copies of the game.
After a quick crash down the charts last week to 27th place from 2nd, Nintendo’s Ouendan! 2 has shot back up to third place this week indicating some supply problems with the game. It has already surpassed its predecessor in sales and now boasts a total of 114 thousand copies sold. There is only one more new entry among the rest of the top ten; Guilty Gear XX Accent Core on the PS2 enters at position four with 32 thousand copies. Wii Sports and Wii Play have now been out for over six months and are still regularly in the top 10, while New Super Mario Bros and Brain Training 2 were released over a year ago.
It’s interesting to note that New Super Mario Bros has reached 4.5 million copies sold and Media Create predicts that it will sell over five million. The only Mario game to sell more copies in Japan was the original Super Mario Bros (with around 6.5 million), and the only games to sell more than that are Pokemon titles.
The hardware chart is very similar to the past few weeks with all consoles staying roughly level. The Wii saw a slight bump in sales to 70 thousand from 59 thousand which may have been caused by the release of Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition as well as by an increase in supply.
In the next two weeks Bandai-Namco are releasing no less than six games, four of which are for the DS. The one that is grabbing the attention of gamers is their Japanese RPG for the Xbox 360, Trusty Bell ~Chopin’s Dream~, or Eternal Sonata as it is to be called in the west. Microsoft are also releasing a version of the 360 with the game bundled. The other non DS game, a new Dragonball Z title on the PSP, is likely to sell more than Trusty Bell in Japan due to the popularity of the anime. Nintendo will also be adding to their Touch! Generations line with a puzzle game called Suujin Taisen. Tecmo will be releasing Ninja Gaiden Sigma for the PS3, their improved version of the Xbox title, on the 14th of June. Square Enix’s Final Fantasy II for the PSP sees its release this week.
