Gamescom is almost within our grasp now, but before the world’s largest trade fair kicks off later this week let’s take a look at what the top five predictions for gamescom 2013 are. Here Oliver, Tom and Pieter discuss what they think will be revealed at gamescom and what will take over the spotlight during the week that lies ahead.
I think most of the publishers have already brought out their big guns at E3 so gamescom will be more about reminding gamers about their upcoming titles and showing some new footage to get us all frothing at the mouth. That said, we still don’t know the exact release dates of the PS4 and Xbox One so hopefully that will be the most exciting news to emerge from gamescom 2013! With that prediction out of the way, here are four other announcements which I expect to see over the course of the event:
A new PS Vita exclusive
By the end of this year the PS Vita will have had a total of three major exclusives released during 2013 – Soul Sacrifice, Killzone: Mercenary and Tearaway. With no new ones on the horizon, I’m expecting Sony to unveil the next game from Uncharted: Golden Abyss studio, SCE Bend Studio, during the event and wouldn’t be surprised if it was another title set in the Uncharted universe.
We know that Naughty Dog is comprised of at least two teams so the question on everyone’s lips concerns what the Uncharted team is working on next. With development on Uncharted 3 wrapping up in late 2011, it makes sense that gamescom would be a good time to announce what Naughty Dog has been working on for the last two years. My guess is that it’s a new action-adventure IP for PS4 since the developer has a history of launching new IPs with each new generation of PlayStation hardware.
Red Dead Redemption 2
We know that Rockstar will be present at gamescom but we aren’t quite sure what they will be announcing (if anything). The developer recently said that they view Red Dead Redemption as one of their ongoing franchises so my hope is that a sequel has been in development for a good couple of years already. I’ll be one of thousands of gamers with a massive smile plastered across my face if RDR2 is indeed announced during gamescom!
A PS4/PS Vita bundle available before the end of 2013
There have been rumours that Sony plans to launch a PS4/PS Vita bundle for around $500 before the end of the year. We know that Day 1 pre-orders for the PS4 are pretty much sold out everywhere so it would be a genius move on Sony’s part to force people to buy a bundle featuring both consoles for $100 more that the PS4′s asking price. This would in all likelihood be the most affordable way for out-of-luck gamers to get their hands on a PS4 before the end of the year, and would be an excellent way to boost sales of and interest in the fledgling handheld. I hope you’re taking notes Sony!
Blizzard reveals Diablo III expansion…or a new World of Warcraft expansion
Blizzard Entertainment has a traditionally very strong presence at gamescom every year, and 2013’s edition of the show will be no different with a host of great activities planned at the developer’s booth (which is usually enormous).
The studio is also promising an announcement that is “sure to capture the attention of the Heavens, Burning Hells and all the shadowed places that lie between.”
Is Blizzard alluding to the reveal of a Diablo III expansion? The original game is due out on consoles in September, but keep in mind it’s been available on PC for over a year now, and Blizzard’s modus operandi would prohibit the studio from not releasing an add-on of some kind.
Blizzard’s next massively multiplayer online game (codenamed Titan) has undergone some changes so we won’t hear about that, but the launch of another World of Warcraft expansion might go some way to cork that game’s dwindling subscriber base, but my money’s on Diablo III getting an add-on announcement at gamescom 2013.
PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release date reveals
While both Sony and Microsoft were happy to announce price points for their upcoming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at E3 2013, the publisher’s were equally cagey about the projected launch windows for their respective consoles with only Microsoft going so far as to announce a ‘November’ release for Xbox One.
Sony is all but confirmed to announce the exact launch date for the PlayStation 4 at gamescom 2013, and it’ll be very interesting to see if the company tries to pip Xbox One to market by releasing in October (or even September) to throttle next-gen console sales before Microsoft lumbers in behind.
Sony and Microsoft could very well hold off on announcing launch dates for their consoles and hold their own special events at a later date (or wait until Tokyo Game Show in September), but I feel that the time is now right for the world to learn the dates to provide enough of a chance to whip gamers into the coming hype cycle so we can all start getting well and truly excited for the next generation.
Microsoft’s Xbox One game announcement
Microsoft itself has gone as far as to confirm that the company will be revealing an as-yet unannounced Xbox One game at gamescom 2013, but the question is: What?
The hints over the possibility of a new open-world action game in Crackdown 3 have been running wild, while Lionhead is yet to weigh in on the next-gen question with a game of its own with the potential for a brand new Fable game (massively multiplayer or not) gaining ground.
The most concrete foundation for a possible announcement that we’ve seen so far, however, is something from the newly-named Black Tusk Studios, previously known as Microsoft Vancouver, which is promising to be created ‘the next Halo.’ Is Black tusk working on the new Crackdown game, or an original intellectual property of its own? I’m guessing the latter, but we’ll see it at gamescom 2013.
A new triple-A game for PlayStation 4
With the PlayStation 4 only launching later this year, and a continued focus on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita games, does it make sense for Sony to announce any new games for its next-gen console at gamescom 2013? Isn’t it too early to start talking about titles that may only launch at the end of 2014 and beyond?
It might hurt in the short term, but the full reveal (or even a decadent tease) of God of War 4 , LittleBigPlanet 3 or Uncharted 4 for PlayStation 4 would cement the console’s place in the future with an already exciting line-up of launch (and ‘launch window’) games from triple-A studios and independent developers, too. I’m fully expecting the reveal of at least one of the three games above, but I wouldn’t be disappointed if some or other blockbuster PS4 game was announced, either.
Left 4 Dead 3
Production text for Valve Software’s next zombie destruction simulator was briefly glimpsed during a tour of the developer’s studio recently, and even though Left 4 Dead 3 may still be a ways off from finding its way into our eager hands it would make for an excellent left-field announcement at gamescom 2013.
It’s more of a wish than an outright prediction, but I do hope that Valve announces Left 4 Dead 3 at the show because the way that it’s presented will finally give us a better idea of the studio’s intentions for the future as it either continues its push into free-to-play games subsidised by micro-transactions (ala Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2), or if the company still sees merit in releasing a full retail product without the trappings of additional payment hooks.
If the situation proves to be the latter, Half-Life 3 is still on the cards. If micro-payments are Valve’s future, Gordon Freeman’s extended adventures are probably on ice for now.
I need to know more about this game so I really hope they announce more details at gamescom. In the reveal trailer I saw so much in such a small time frame, but I need to see the second part of this new trilogy.
Mirrors Edge 2
We have already seen a small teaser trailer about this, but I trust that they might reveal more about this game at the show. This might just be a fantasy, but I’m still holding out hope.
Resident Evil 7
Capcom might announce a new Resident Evil title for next-gen and current-gen consoles. A few months back there was some hearsay that Capcom would announcing a new Resident Evil game this year and it hasn’t happened yet…could they do it this month?
This year is going to be all about the next-gen consoles and the publishers will be revealing more awesome information about the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. Unannounced titles, features, actual release dates etc. There is still so much about these consoles that we have to learn so this is going to be an exciting time!
Left 4 Dead 3
There have been so many rumours going around about Left 4 Dead 3 over the last few weeks. I have a feeling it’s going to make an appearance at the show and people will be going crazy about it. I would rather have them show Half-Life Episode 3, but I have a feeling people will be smiling ear to ear with all the details about Left 4 Dead 3. Will it be a multi-platform game or will it be a PC/Xbox One exclusive like the other games in the series? Only time will tell.
