There’s something very special about waiting for your anticipated Collector’s Edition to arrive on launch day. The doorbell rings, you race outside, and once you’ve built up the courage to actually open it you breathe deeply of the air that’s trapped within. It somehow makes everything in the world seem alright, it even makes the end of the month Salticrax worth it.
The number of Collector’s Editions that are available over the coming months this year are both exciting and mildly terrifying. The ones that have caught my eye are mostly those that include a figurine or art book, and being game series that I enjoy I don’t mind spending a few extra pennies to grow my gaming collection.
These are my top picks from now until June.
Tomb Raider is one of my most anticipated games of 2013, and I’m really looking forward to finally getting my hands on the Collector’s Edition. It includes a stunning Lara Croft figurine which will be an awesome addition to my collection, and I know the art book will be fascinating given the new art style the game has taken.
The ‘Endurance’ Survival tin, soundtrack, map and other added extras are bonus items for me, and of course I can’t wait to play the game! You can also get The Survival Edition which includes most of these exclusives (except the figurine and the tin) but is available at a lower price point. There will also be a Limited Edition Tomb Raider Xbox 360 controller available for those fans looking for that little something extra to remember the launch by.
Tomb Raider will be available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on March 5th. You can browse through our previous coverage here.
The Last of Us
The Collector’s Edition for The Last of Us is going to make you choose between Joel and Ellie. Depending on which special edition you choose you’ll get artwork representing each character on the packaging and a skin for your DualShock 3 controller.
You’ll also get a first issue comic book and a mini-artbook, which knowing Naughty Dog will be incredible to look over, as well as other extras including the soundtrack. Unfortunately the European edition doesn’t include the amazing statue of Joel and Ellie, neither does it include the full size 170 page artbook that North American gamers can look forward to with their Post-Pandemic and Survival Editions. These two elements are sold separately, however, and I’m seriously considering making plans to get them.
The Last of Us will be available exclusively on the PlayStation 3 on June 14th. You can browse through our previous coverage here.
God of War: Ascension
Kratos is back in God of War: Ascension, and if you pick up the Collector’s Edition you’ll be able to gaze at the God of War every day with a stylishly crafted statue. Given how much I’ve enjoyed the previous instalments in the series it would be seriously remiss of me to not add the Ghost of Sparta to my collection. It also includes the game’s soundtrack and various other bonuses.
If you’re a major fan of the series you can also look out for two new console bundles to celebrate the launch, the bundle for North America will include a Garnet Red PS3 and all six God of War games and the European bundle will include a Classic White PS3 and a special edition DualShock 3 controller.
God of War: Ascension will be available exclusively on the PlayStation 3 on March 12th in North America and March 15th in Europe. You can browse through our previous coverage here.
Two other great Collector’s Editions that you might want to keep an eye out for include the one for Injustice: Gods Among Us, which features an incredibly detailed statue of Batman and Wonder Woman, and the Ultimate Songbird Edition for Bioshock Infinite which includes a beautifully detailed statue crafted by an Irrational Games concept artist.

Some other great titles will also be launching over the next few weeks, and while many of these don’t feature Collector’s Editions if you pre-order the game you can get some awesome incentives including T-shirts and downloadable content, making it very worth your while to purchase the day one editions.
What Collector’s Editions are you most looking forward to and have your top picks changed since we asked you in January? And have you already pre-ordered any of the upcoming releases, with or without the Collector’s Edition?
