Welcome to Fr33-to-Play Friday – a weekly look at some of the best free-to-play games available along with full games that are being given away for a limited time.

Two of the best mobile titles that have gone free-to-play in recent weeks are Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (‘Sonic Racing Transformed’ on Android) and Contra: Evolution. Both are available from the Apple App Store and Google Play, and bring arcade thrills to your tablet or smartphone.
You’ll have to check out the free-to-play mobile version of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed for yourself as I’ve only played the home console release. From various reviews I’ve read it seems like you’ll need to spend money to unlock all the tracks and characters the game has to offer, but this free version at least allows you to take it for a spin on your mobile device to get an idea of its control scheme and how it performs on a technical level.
On the other hand, I’ve played through Contra: Evolution and can safely say that you can breeze through the entire campaign without needing to purchase any of the available items such as extra lives and shields. The game’s graphics, music and sound effects are all great and the virtual controls work well although there’s no option to turn off auto-firing. All in all, I was very chuffed to relive this classic on my iPad without spending a penny and was pleasantly surprised by how unobtrusive and unneeded the in-app purchases were.
A PC game that’s currently free is Plants vs. Zombies Game of the Year Edition. This classic tower defence title usually costs R50 and is being given away as part of Origin’s On the House scheme to encourage PC players to use the platform.
Plants vs. Zombies is one of the most popular downloadable titles of all time and should provide you with hours of thrilling entertainment as you defend your home from the zombie invasion.
Finally, IGN is currently featuring The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 for iOS devices as its free game of the month. This interactive adventure series presents players with some tough choices at times and if you’re a fan of the TV series Once Upon a Time then you’ll probably find a lot of similarities with The Wolf Among Us’ modern take on famous fairytales.
Telltale Games’ titles often launch with numerous technical issues so if you’re planning on playing through The Wolf Among Us on your Apple device then this freebie is a great way to test the waters.
Unfortunately you’ll need to either live in the United States or have access to a US VPN to take advantage of this particular freebie but there are plenty of free VPN services such as Hotspot Shield that you can use to obtain the App Store code that you’ll need to redeem before you can download the game.
Will you be downloading any of this week’s freebies or giving them a miss? Let us know in the comments.
